TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Losing presidential candidate pair Anies Baswedan - Muhaimin Iskandar congratulated their victorious rivals, Prabowo Subianto and Gibran Rakabuming Raka, after the Constitutional Court rejected the challenges to the 2024 election results on Monday, April 22.
Anies said all stages of the 2024 presidential election process had been completed on Monday. “We would like to congratulate Pak Prabowo and Pak Gibran for fulfilling the constitutional mandate,” Anies said in a video responding to the Constitutional Court's decision which was posted on his YouTube channel on Monday, April 22.
According to him, Prabowo is a patriot. “Today, I continue to believe that he is a patriot.”
As someone who received a modern education from a young age and came from a highly respected intellectual family, Anies believed that Prabowo certainly understood that in a good democracy, the government must accept the existence of the opposition party as a partner in running the state.
The former governor of Jakarta also expected Prabowo to maintain the balance and independence of the three branches of government; the executive, legislative, and judicial. He also urged Prabowo to ensure media freedom as the fourth pillar of democracy and protect people's freedom of association and assembly.
“I believe that Pak Prabowo as a patriotic person will restore and maintain democratic values in Indonesia's future,” Anies remarked.
On April 22, the Constitutional Court or MK fully rejected the challenge filed by Anies Baswedan and Muhaimin Iskandar, which ultimately sealed the victory of Prabowo Subianto and Gibran Rakabuming Raka. However, three judges issued dissenting opinions. They are Saldi Isra, Arief Hidayat and Enny Nurbaningsih.
