TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Statistics Indonesia or BPS assesses that the geopolitical conflict between Iran and Israel has no significant impact on Indonesian trade, as the value of trade in goods between Indonesia and both countries is relatively small.
"Both of them are not Indonesia's main trading partners in the Middle East," said Acting Head of BPS Amalia A. Widyasanti at a press conference in Jakarta on Monday, April 22, 2024.
Throughout 2023, Indonesia’s value of international trade in goods to the Middle East reached US$19.2 billion with export value at US$9.06 billion, or 3.05 percent of Indonesia's total exports. Meanwhile, the import value amounted to US$10.13 billion and contributed to 4.57 Indonesia’s total imports.
The three countries in the region with the largest trade value with Indonesia are Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Oman.
Amalia explained that Indonesia’s exports to Iran in 2023 only amounted to US$195.13 million. This figure is 2.15 percent of Indonesia's total exports to the Middle East. Indonesia exported three main commodities to Iran, including fruit, vehicles and their parts, and various chemical products.
Meanwhile, the value of imports of goods from Iran amounted to US$11.72 million or 0.12 percent of total imports from the Middle East. The main commodities imported from Iran are fruit, fuel, and organic chemicals. Thus, Indonesia experienced a trade balance surplus with Iran of around US$ 183.41 million.
On the other hand, Indonesia’s export value to Israel reached US$165.77 million in 2023, with an import value of up to US$21.93 million, or 0.22 percent of Indonesia's total imports from the Middle East.
