Jakarta Governor Advises Post-Eid Newcomers to Have Jobs, Place to Live

TEMPO.CO, JakartaActing Governor of Jakarta Heru Budi Hartono said that newcomers have the right to enter Jakarta after the Eid holiday, as long as they meet certain criteria; having good jobs and a home to live in.

"That is what the regional government asks from the public,” Heru said on Monday, April 8.

Heru hopes that newcomers to Jakarta will get good jobs and become disciplined citizens of the region. He also hopes that they can participate in maintaining the security and cleanliness of Jakarta.

City Planning Expert from the Regional and City Infrastructure Systems Expertise Group, School of Architecture, Planning and Policy Development, Bandung Institute of Technology, I Gusti Ayu Andani, stated that the Eid homecoming phenomenon is very closely related to the urbanization process - people moving from rural areas to cities. Jakarta is often the top destination for this process.

The urbanization process is influenced by development that is concentrated in large cities which attracts residents from various regions in search of jobs and better economic opportunities. Rapid and uncontrolled movement can cause enormous stress on city infrastructure, including transportation systems.

"Homecoming on a large scale adds to this pressure because the transportation system has to handle a much higher volume of people's movements in a short time," she said in a written statement on Thursday, April 4, 2024.

Heru, in a statement on Monday, said he would still look at the trend of arrivals to Jakarta seven days after the Eid holiday. The Acting Governor said data on newcomers entering Jakarta would be recorded at the Dukcapil Service.

"For now, more people are exiting Jakarta than entering," said Heru, noting that 20,000 residents had left Jakarta as of Monday morning.
