193.6 Million People Projected to Participate in Eid Homecoming, Transportation Ministry Says

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Transportation projected that 193.6 million people or 71.7 percent of the Indonesian population will carry out Eid homecoming exodus trips during the 2024 Eid al-Fitr period.

“We predicted the figure based on the mapping of holiday dates that have been determined,” Head of the Transportation Agency of the Ministry of Transportation Robby Kurniawan said in a press conference in Jakarta on Sunday.

He noted that the figure was obtained from a survey, joined by 48,107 respondents in 38 provinces, with a margin of error of 0.46 percent.

Based on the survey, the people make homecoming trips because they want to celebrate Eid al-Fitr in their hometowns (52 percent); they perceive that it is a tradition to visit relatives in their hometowns (35.2 percent); and they use the Eid holiday for visiting tourist attractions (10.6 percent).

“Looking at the trends in 2022, 2023, and 2024, we see an upward trend (in the number of people partaking in the Eid homecoming exodus),” he said.

The results of a survey in 2022 revealed that the potential movements during the Eid al-Fitr period were recorded at 31.6 percent of the population or 85.5 million people while in 2023, the potential movements stood at 45.8 percent or 123.8 million people.

“This year, our focus is how to anticipate a quite big increase in the number if homecoming travelers that potentially travel compared to those in both 2022 and 2023,” Kurniawan remarked.
