TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo or Jokowi convened a limited meeting with the cabinet ministers at the State Palace, Jakarta, on Wednesday, March 13, 2024, to discuss Government Regulation (PP) No. 96 of 2021 on the implementation of mineral and coal mining business activities. This PP specifically regulates foreign mining permits.
The meeting commenced at 09:30 am. Several ministers walked out of the palace doors at 10:30 am, including Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Minister Arifin Tasrif, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani, and Law and Human Rights Minister Yasonna Laoly.
“It's still being finalized,” Arifin said when met after the meeting. “Hopefully it'll be finalized quickly.”
Arifin refused to elaborate further on his statement when asked if the revision of PP No. 96 of 2021 was to accommodate PT Freeport Indonesia's license extension.
President Joko Widodo granted PT Freeport Indonesia the liberty to extend its mining license in Grasberg, Papua, for a maximum of 20 years during his meeting with Freeport-McMoRan Inc. (FCX) CEO Richard Adkerson at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Washington DC, United States, on November 14, 2023.
In December 2023, Arifin said that the elimination of the deadline for the contract extensions would be finalized through the revision of Government Regulation (PP) No. 96 of 2021. He stressed that regardless of the revision of the regulation, Freeport and other mining business permit holders must commit to fulfilling their obligations to downstream metal minerals in the country.
