TEMPO.CO, JakartaSoekarno-Hatta Airport Customs and Excise Office has commenced restricting entry of imported goods brought by passengers traveling from abroad based on the Trade Minister’s Regulation No. 36 of 2023 on import policies and regulations. The policy, passed on December 11, 2023, came into effect on March 10, 2024.

“People are advised to pay attention to the policy implementation because the goods are often carried by passengers when they return to Indonesia as souvenirs for family and relatives,” the Customs and Excise Office head Gatot Sugeng Wibowo said in Tangerang on March 10, as quoted from Antara.

List of restricted imported goods

Gatot explained that the policy shifted the monitoring of imported goods from the post-border system, in which the monitoring is initiated when the goods are distributed in the market, to the border system.

There are five categories of items that passengers are permitted to bring in a limited quantity. The details are as follows:

1. Footwear (maximum of two pairs of footwear per passenger)

2. Bags (maximum of two bags per passenger)

3. Electronics (maximum of five units with a total price of US$1,500 per passenger)

4. Mobile phones, computers, tablets, and headsets (maximum of two units per passenger)

5. Textile products (maximum of five pieces per passenger)

Gatot stressed that the policy is applicable to all passengers from abroad, including migrant workers. Those carrying more than the regulated amount will be subject to import fees.

“If the load exceeds, as long as they want to pay import duties and taxes then it will be acceptable,” he said.

How to calculate import duties and taxes on imported goods

According to the official page of the Surabaya Customs and Excise Office, import duties and taxes are generally set at 7.5 percent and 10 percent, respectively. The rate can be calculated by using the Mobile Bea Cukai app, which is available on the Google Play Store.
