House Denies Possible Direct Appointment of Future Jakarta Governor; Regional Election Will Persist

4 March 2024 11:35 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaVice Chair of the House of Representatives (DPR) Sufmi Dasco Ahmad denied the reports of the direct appointment of Jakarta’s regional head. He stressed that Jakarta governors will still be elected by residents going forward through regional elections.

“So, information saying Jakarta governors are appointed through mechanisms other than an election is all false,” he said as quoted by Antara on Jakarta, Sunday, March 3, 2024.

Dasco asked all parties to refrain from giving false information or hoaxes. According to him, both the government and political parties aimed to hold the Jakarta gubernatorial election this November.

“DPR had agreed with the government that Jakarta governor will be elected through the regional election mechanism,” said the Gerindra Party politician.

Earlier in a plenary meeting, DPR officiated the Draft Bill on Jakarta Specialty Status as a house-led bill. This bill will stipulate the status of Jakarta after the capital city transfers to IKN.

Vice Presidential candidate number 3 Mahfud Md asked citizens to safeguard the drafting of the Jakarta Specialty Status Bill and reminded people that the Bill contained a misleading point. The misleading point concerned the provision on DPR choosing two names as gubernatorial candidates in Jakarta.

“This birthed more cronyism potential, and citizens must reject the provision. This is a new ploy to intervene, to be dishonest in Jakarta gubernatorial election,” he said last Friday.

Mahfud also hoped significant political parties would keep rejecting any appointment of Jakarta governor in any form except for the usual general elections.
