TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Youth and Sports Minister Dito Ariotedjo set a target for the country to maintain its tradition of winning gold medals at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
“Of course, we have a goal to maintain the tradition of winning gold medals in the Olympics. We hope that [the performance during the upcoming Olympics] can surpass the previous one,” Dito said in a press conference after the signing of the agreement on the national training preparation for the Paris 2024 Olympic Qualifications in Jakarta, on Thursday, Feb. 29.
He said the deal was related to the ministry’s target for athletes who have secured tickets to compete in the summer tournament.
The minister acknowledged Indonesia's poor performance in the Olympics compared to that of the SEA Games and Asian Games.
However, he claimed that the country’s sports had already been bolstered by the National Sports Grand Design (DBON), competitions, and training camps. Additionally, sports scientists, sports psychologists, and others have been enlisted specifically for the 2024 Olympics.
“We hope that the preparations for the Olympics will be more comprehensive and yield better results than before,” Dito added.
Dito also emphasized the importance of continued collaboration and intensive communication between athletes, officials, coaches, sports administrators, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Indonesian Olympic Committee, and the Indonesian National Sports Committee (KONI).
The Ministry had allocated substantial budgets for athletes for the Olympics qualification, such as for the Indonesian Shooting Association (Perbakin) and the Indonesian Gymnastics Association (PODSI) totaling Rp19.8 billion.
With this financial support, Dito expected each sport to prepare the best so that as many athletes as possible could qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
