TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Australian Chief of Defense Force, General Angus Campbell AO, DSC, visited Jakarta to discuss defense and security issues of mutual interest to Australia and Indonesia. During his visit, Gen. Campbell met Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto and Gen. Agus Subiyanto, the newly appointed Commander of the Indonesian Military (TNI).
In a release on Feb. 20, the Australian Embassy in Jakarta stated that Campbell and Agus also discussed options to strengthen and broaden bilateral defense collaborations as well as cooperation in response to the range of security challenges in the region.
Both generals also agreed on the importance of people-to-people links between TNI and the Australian Defense Force.
In his meeting with Prabowo Subianto, Campbell and the minister talked about the longevity of defense relationships between the two nations as well as opportunities for closer collaboration on a shared vision for an open, stable, and prosperous region.
Previously, the Australian Ministry of Defense stated that Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's government would continue to supply weapons to the TNI, provide military training and export military equipment to Indonesia.
Australia and Indonesia have had a long-standing military relationship, conducting joint exercises. Australia also supplies Indonesia with weapons. In 2014, Thales Australia sold three Bushmaster troop carriers to Kopassus, Indonesia's elite forces.
