TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Environment Office will clean up the capital city from campaign props waste during the cool-down period ahead of the 2024 elections, starting on Sunday, February 11. Chief of Jakarta Environment Office, Asep Kuswanto, said that his office would not let the campaign waste enter the landfills or even be scattered.
"The cleaning up of the campaign props will be started on early Sunday," Asep told Tempo in a WhatsApp message on Friday, Feb. 9.
The handling of campaign props waste was specified in a circular from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK). Through the Circular Letter of Environment and Forestry Minister Number 3 of 2024 dated January 31, 2024, regional heads must prevent campaign equipment waste from mixing with other waste in landfills as it is categorized as waste that appears irregularly.
The authorities will separate the waste once they collect all of the campaign props. "After they have been collected, they will be separated, which ones will still be used or reused and which ones will no longer be used," he said.
Unused campaign props will be taken to the Waste Filter facility in the TB Simatupang area, South Jakarta, where the regional government manages the Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) to dry and reduce the water content of waste that has previously been chopped into small pieces. The shredded waste will also be used to generate electricity.
The public can also offer several types of campaign waste to be recycled into creative products. Gudskul Engineering and Tried (GudRnD), a group of product engineers, and Stuffo are two communities that are actively recycling the 2024 Election campaign props. In a studio in Jagakarsa, South Jakarta, they collect and process banners, posters, and other types of props. to be processed into useful goods.
One of the processed products is multiflex—an imitation of a wooden board made from several layers of banners. Processed APK can also be used as furniture such as cupboards, tables, or other objects. "We hope that multiflex can be an alternative eco material," said Mohammad Aldino, a member of GudRnD to Tempo.
