TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Investment Minister Bahlil Lahadalia hoped the downstream industry programs will resume even after the current administration comes to an end.
"For the next leadership, whoever becomes the Investment Minister, I recommend continuing the downstream industry," he said when met in Jakarta on Wednesday, January 31, 2024.
According to Bahlil, Indonesia will potentially regress without downstream industry and even go all the way back to its starting point. "We will not be able to enjoy peak demographic bonus if that's the case," he said.
On the other hand, one of the requirements to break free from the middle trap income is to create quality employment opportunities. Bahlil believes the instrument is realized through a downstream-induced investment.
"I previously said that the target for downstream is US$545.3 billion by 2040," he said.
He also presented that 26 percent of Indonesia's Rp1.418 trillion investment target in 2023 came from the downstream industry. "I want to set a target of 45 percent in the future to realize our investment target," he concluded.
