TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Environment and Forestry Siti Nurbaya and United States Forest Service Randy Moore conducted a working visit to Central Kalimantan on January 24 concerning climate crisis management.

Both of them inspected activities in the Forest Village Governmental Agency (LPHD) in Tuwung, Pulang Pisau Regency, Karang Bengkirai Village, Palangkaraya City, and the area of Sebangau National Park.

Randy Moore on Thursday stated that he appreciated Indonesia's action in anticipating and managing the climate crisis.

In LHPD Tuwung, the entourage witnessed village residents' efforts to manage social forestry previously vulnerable to wildfires and transform it into a productive village. LPHD Tuwung so far has four social forestry business units (KUPS); silvofishery, kelulut honey, crafts from non-wood forest products, and livestock. During this inspection, Situ Nurbaya and Randy Moore reviewed each of the products.

Data from Social Forestry and Environmental Partnership DG reported that LPHD Tuwung garnered over Rp105 million for livestock units, Rp117 million from silvofishery, and Rp22 million from kelulut honey from 2021 to 2023.

After, the entourage visited Kereng Bangkirai Village to inspect a peatland hydrological management. Technical units of the environmental ministry and Peatland and Mangrove Restoration Agency presented best practices they have done in terms of wildfire control, law enforcement, and peatland control to Randy Moore.

The last location they visited was Sebangau National Park at Resort Mangkok. Sebangau National Park is one of Indonesia's biggest peatland conservation areas. The function of this area was stipulated under Law No. 5 of 1990. Those include the protection of life-supporting systems, preservation of biodiversity and its ecosystem, and utilization of natural resources and ecosystems.

In Resort Mangkok, the entourage listened to the explanation of Forest Ecosystem Control officers on peatland management, peatland canal development, and planting trees, and ended in a discussion with Randy Moore and Siti Nurbaya.
