TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia is one of the world's biggest Muslim-majority countries, recording over 86 percent Muslim population out of 275 million people. Mosques, the place for Muslims to conduct their various religious activities, are found in every nook and cranny across the state.
Mosques vary in sizes and capacity, depending on the location and the number of surrounding Muslim residents. There is quite the list of large Mosques in Indonesia, including the renowned Istiqlal Mosque.
Below are the top seven largest Mosques in Indonesia. Important to note that the data may slightly differ from sources to sources.
1. Istiqlal Mosque, Jakarta
Istiqlal Mosque was a post-Independence ambition of a large Mosque located in Jakarta. Standing side by side with Sawah Besar Cathedral, this Indonesia's largest Mosque was built on 9.8 hectares of land with a 24,200 meter square building. Istiqlal Mosque can house over 200,000 pilgrims.
2. Islamic Center Mosque, Samarinda

Its dome was also modeled after the Hagia Sophia Mosque in Istanbul. This Mosque also offers a beautiful sight of Mahakam River.
3. Al-Akbar, Surabaya
The Al-Akbar Mosque in Pagesangan was built on August 4, 1995, initiated by Surabaya Mayor at the time, Soemarto Soemoprawiro. The Mosque stands on 11.2 hectares of land with 28,509 meter square building. This Mosque may holds over 36,000 pilgrims.
4. Al-Jabbar Mosque, Bandung
The Al-Jabbar Mosque was controversial down to its conception, due to its overwhelmingly high budget of Rp1 trillion. Officially opened in December 2022, the Mosque was built on 25 hectares of land and could house over 30,000 pilgrims.
The facilities in this Mosque include Ma'rodh, an Islamic education exhibition room, and a themed park.
5. Central Java's Agung Mosque, Semarang
Abbreviated as MAJT, this Mosque is located at Gayamsari, Semarang. The Mosque was built in 2006, and inaugurated in 2010 on 10 hectares of land. The Mosque has over 10,000 pilgrims capacity. The Mosque also houses a convention hall, a hotel, and a library.
6. Dian Al-Mahri Mosque, Depok
Dian Al-Mahri Mosque or the Golden Dome is a popular icon for Depok. With a capacity of around 20,000 pilgrims, the 8,000 meter square Mosque stands on 5 hectares of land.
7. Baiturrahman Mosque, Banda Aceh
Built in 1636 under Sultan Iskandar Muda, this Mosque attracted Muslims abroad such as Turkiye to learn deeper about Islam.
This Mosque has been through a number of hardships, including Dutch colonialism and the 2004 tsunami.
Baiturrahman Mosque stands on 3.1 hectares of land with a 4,760 meter square building. The capacity inside the Mosque was 9,000 people and 24,000 outside.
