TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) expressed his condolences over the passing of Indonesian weightlifter Lisa Rumbewas, who had achieved world-level achievements during her lifetime.

"Indonesia has lost one of the nation's best daughters. A sportsperson who was endlessly committed and made history for this country," he wrote in a post on his Instagram account @jokowi on Sunday.

He noted that Rumbewas has made a number of outstanding achievements as a medalist in three different editions of the Olympics.

The athlete won a silver medal at the Sydney 2000 Summer Olympics and the Athens 2004 Summer Olympics, as well as a bronze medal at the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics.

Jokowi said that in addition to the three Olympic medals, Lisa Rumbewas also made Indonesia proud through various other achievements in weightlifting, such as winning silver in the 53 kg class of the 2006 World Weightlifting Championships in Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic.

She also won a bronze medal at the 2002 Asian Games in the 48 kg weightlifting category.

In his post, President Jokowi also stated that Rumbewas won three medals in three different editions of the SEA Games: a bronze medal at the 2003 SEA Games in Hanoi, a silver medal at the 2005 SEA Games in Manila, and a gold medal at the 2009 SEA Games in Vientiane.

"I extend my condolences on the passing of Lisa Rumbewas. I am praying for strength and fortitude for the family. Hopefully, her merits as a sports hero will always be remembered and inspire Indonesian athletes," he said.

Lisa Rumbewas was reported to have passed away at Jayapura Regional Public Hospital, Papua, on Sunday at 3 a.m. local time.

The athlete, born on September 10, 1980, was the daughter of a family of athletes and pioneers of weightlifting in Papua.
