TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Overtourism is a phenomenon that occurs when an excessive number of tourists visit certain destinations and has become more prevalent after the COVID-19 pandemic ended. This situation can lead to conflicts with locals and prompt governments to impose more levies to control the influx of visitors.
With more and more people traveling, every traveler should be aware of overpacked tourist sites in a bid to prevent their bad impacts. Here is a list of five top vacation places favored among holidaymakers that you may consider avoiding this year, according to Travel Off Path:
1. Venice, Italy
Locals have increasingly opposed the arrival of large groups of tourists in the city. The local government and UNESCO have also expressed concern about the potential harm caused by excessive numbers of visitors.
Some initiatives such as a trial of charging daily visitors €5 or Rp85,000 and the most recent one is a ban on tourist groups of more than 25 people have already been implemented.
2. Athens, Greece
Athens has suffered periods of overcrowding at some of its main tourist sites, prompting the local government to launch a trial of a visitor cap that requires tourists to make online reservations to visit the city's famous Acropolis landmark. Similar trials will be executed at other sites if successful.
3. Amsterdam, Netherland
Overtourism has reached a breaking point in Amsterdam, where large numbers of misbehaving tourists have created endless issues for locals. As a result, the government is determined to launch "stay away" campaigns and restrict rental accommodations and souvenir shop licenses.
4. Paris, France
For many people, Paris is at the top of their travel bucket list. However, the influx of tourists has caused prices to skyrocket and scams to increase.
With the romantic city set to host the 2024 Olympics, visiting in the summer will likely be more expensive than ever.
5. La Rambla, Barcelona
The overflowing crowds in La Rambla can make it a terrible place to visit this summer. The local government has begun considering visitor caps to prevent overtourism. Despite its beauty, the city is on the top list of tourist destinations to avoid this year.
