Indonesia's Health Ministry Reports Deaths of Two Omicron JN.1 Patients in Batam

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Health reported the death of two patients infected with the Omicron JN.1 and XBB.2.3.10.1 (GE.1) sub-variants of Covid-19 in Batam City, Riau Islands Province.

According to the report received by the Health Ministry, the city of Batam has so far recorded three cases of Covid-19. In addition to the two who died, another patient is currently still in treatment.

"This was based on an update on Covid-19 deaths verification report from the Batam Public Health Laboratory (BTKL)," Siti Nadia Tarmizi, head of the ministry's Communications and Public Services Bureau, said in Jakarta, on Tuesday, December 26.

The ministry said that the patient who tested positive for the BA.2.86.1, a sub-lineage of the JN.1 was a male named FV (48). He died on December 18 2023 at Embung Fatimah Hospital.

The patient who tested positive for the Subvariant Omicron GE.1 was a male named GNS (77) who died on December 21, 2023, at Elizabeth Hospital (RS) Lubuk Baja.
