TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government bagged Japan's commitment to develop the MRT Jakarta East-West Corridor last Saturday, December 26, 2023. The development would connect Cikarang, Bekasi Regency with Balaraja, Tangerang Regency.

The commitment was relayed during President Joko Widodo's meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in Tokyo.

Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi mentioned the groundbreaking of this project was targeted for August next year. "[Jokowi] also pushed for the development of the North-South [MRT] route Phase 2A and 2B to be finalized on time," she said in a virtual press conference on Saturday.

Prior to kicking off his visit to Japan, Jokowi inspected the progress of Phase 2A of MRT Jakarta development at MRT Monas Station on Friday. The development, the president claimed, has reached 28.4 percent. "Surpassing the target," Jokowi said.

Based on the Minutes of Discussion inked by the Indonesian government and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) last November, the East-West Corridor will span across 84.1 kilometers from Balaraja, Tangerang to Cikarang, Bekasi.

The underground project will be phased out into four stages, namely Phase 1 Stage 1 spanning across 30.1 kilometers for Tomang-Medan Satria, and Phase 1 Stage 2 for Kembangan-Tomang spanning across 9.2 kilometers. For Phase 2, the development consists of the East, spanning 20.5 kilometers for Medan Satria-Cikarang, and the West, spanning 29.9 kilometers for Kembangan-Balaraja.
