Jokowi to Meet with Japanese PM Fumio Kishida in Tokyo

16 December 2023 01:13 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaIndonesian President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo was scheduled to visit Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in Tokyo on Saturday, Dec. 16, to discuss various efforts to strengthen ties between the two countries.

“The President of the Republic of Indonesia and the Prime Minister of Japan will meet tomorrow (Dec. 16) to discuss efforts that can further strengthen our bilateral relations,” Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said at the inauguration ceremony of the Indonesian Embassy building in Tokyo on Friday, Dec. 15.

The meeting is part of the agenda of the ASEAN-Japan Summit to be held on December 16-17, 2023.

“The Japanese Deputy Foreign Minister said earlier that the relationship between Indonesia and Japan has been quite intense this year,” Retno added.

According to her, Japan is Indonesia's second-largest trading partner with a total trade value reaching more than US$42 billion or about Rp651.2 trillion in 2022. Japan is also Indonesia’s fourth largest investor with a total investment value of US$3.56 billion or about Rp55.2 trillion in 2022.

ASEAN and Japan agreed to adopt a comprehensive strategic partnership during the 26th ASEAN-Japan Summit in Jakarta last year.

Japan also reaffirmed its commitment to support the implementation of the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP) by providing US$100 million or Rp1.6 trillion in funding through the Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF) 3.0.
