TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Presidential candidate Anies Baswedan spoke of Indonesia's issue with regulatory inconsistencies. Anies claimed he found this during his duty as the Minister of Education and Jakarta's Governor.
"During that time I truly felt that we lacked a national guideline, almost [in] every issue," he said during an event at Mega Bank Tower, Jakarta on Monday, Dec. 11.
Anies proceeded to give an example of licensing. According to him, the provincial government often took unilateral decisions and reformed licensing without instruction from the central government.
Another example given was the issue of pregnancy health, where the local government decided on measures without any instructions. "There must be a national guideline," he said.
Concerning regulatory inconsistencies, Anies promised he would form a clearing house if elected as president in the upcoming 2024 general elections. This clearing house would become a forum to resolve inconsistency issues involving all stakeholders, including businesspeople.
Regulatory inconsistencies, he claimed, have been a point of contention from companies, domestic or abroad. This, he believed, was the reason why foreign investors were hesitant to enter Indonesia.
According to Anies, Indonesia is faced with a condition where investors are aware of this country's situation, making it impossible to lie. For example, he went on, about regulatory inconsistencies and complicated bureaucracy. "They have sufficient information [on the issue]," he said.
Additionally, there is still rigidity and irregularity between the central and local government as well as corruption. "That's a fact," said Anies.
Weak supporting infrastructure is among the myriad of issues in need of acknowledgment by the government.
"Since we want to build a trust level with investors, not the investment itself," he concluded.
