TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia has thus far secured five spots in the Paris 2024 Olympics through the sports of archery, climbing, and gymnastics. The country's Sports Minister Dito Ariotedjo expressed his hope that more athletes could win spots in the international multi-sport event, which will be held from July 26 to August 11, 2024.
The five Indonesian athletes who are confirmed to participate in the upcoming Summer Olympics in France are Arif Dwi Pangestu (archery), Diananda Choirunisa (archery), Rifda Irfanaluthfi (gymnastics), Desak Made Rita (speed climbing), and Rahmad Adi Mulyono (speed climbing).
“We hope that more athletes will make it [to the Paris 2024 Olympics]. There are still many sports that have not yet been completed, such as athletics, swimming, archery, weightlifting, climbing, and shooting. We'll see how many athletes qualify [for the Olympics] in the first quarter of 2024,” Dito said at a press conference in Jakarta, on Tuesday, Dec. 5.
Arif Dwi Pangestu secured the first ticket after emerging as a standout semifinalist at the 2023 World Archery Championships in Berlin, Germany.
Diananda Choirunisa got the ticket after winning a bronze medal in the recurve mixed doubles number at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games.
Rifda Irfanaluthfi, who performed well at the 2023 World Artistic Gymnastics in Antwerp, Belgium last October, secured the spot through reallocation. She is the first Indonesian gymnast to compete at the Olympics.
Desak Made Rita secured her ticket for becoming a champion in the 2023 World Climbing Championship in Bern, Switzerland, on August 11 in the women's speed category.
Rahmad Adi Mulyono is the second climbing athlete to qualify for the upcoming Olympics after winning the IFSC (International Federation of Sport Climbing) 2023 Asian Qualifier in Jakarta last November.
Indonesia sent 28 athletes to both the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in July-August 2021 and the Rio 2016 Olympics. The Merah Putih squad brought home one gold medal from badminton (women's doubles Greysia Polii / Apriyani Rahayu), one silver medal from weightlifting (lifter Eko Yuli Irawan), and three bronze medals.
