TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo visited East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) on Tuesday, Dec. 5, to oversee the construction progress of Mbay Dam in Nagekeo Regency. The project is expected to contribute to the realization of national food sovereignty.
“All the construction of dams and irrigation is our big strategy for food security, food sovereignty,” the President said in a statement released by the Palace Press and Media Bureau.
The construction of the dam started in late 2021 and was expected to be completed by the end of 2024. The dam will have a capacity of up to 51 million cubic meters of water.
“Later, it will irrigate approximately 4,200 hectares [of land], and 1,900 hectares more,” he added.
The state head expressed his hope that the dam would boost rice production in Nagekeo Regency by up to 2.5 times when completed.
The Mbay Dam was built by the Kupang II Nusa Tenggara River Regional Agency and is located in Rendubutowe Village, South Aesesa District, which is about 30 kilometers from the center of Nagekeo Regency.
