COP28: Indonesia Committed to Achieve NZE Target Sooner Than 2060

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo or Jokowi reiterated Indonesia's firm commitment to achieving the net-zero emissions (NZE) target sooner than 2060 for the sake of realizing an inclusive economy and emerging as a prosperous and sustainable country.

According to a press statement released in Jakarta on Friday, Widodo made the statement in his speech at the Conference of the Parties 28 (COP28) climate change high-level event in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates.

In his remarks, he noted that Indonesia has been consistent in investing all-out efforts to reduce the amount of carbon emissions, including by improving the management of the forest and other land use (FoLU) sector and expediting clean energy transition.

"In terms of the management of the FoLU sector, Indonesia has continued to protect and expand the area of mangroves while rehabilitating forests and lands," he noted.

Widodo then emphasized that Indonesia had been successful in suppressing the rate of deforestation to the lowest figure in the last two decades while noting the country's success in developing productive nurseries on a massive scale.

"We have been conducting massive development of nurseries, with a total capacity of about 75 million seeds per year. The nurseries have become operational," he stated.

Jokowi, as the president is widely known, then drew attention to energy transition, saying that the Indonesian government had been taking various measures for transitioning into more eco-friendly energy resources.

"Indonesia has been intensifying the optimization of new and renewable energy resources, such as solar, water, wind, geothermal, and ocean current, in tandem with developing biodiesel, bioethanol, and bio aviation fuel," he remarked.

Jokowi affirmed that Indonesia will continue to make all-out efforts to achieve the NZE target while enjoying steadily increasing economic growth, a significant decline in poverty rate, and an increase in the number of job opportunities.

However, he reminded of the importance of multiparty collaboration to reduce carbon emissions to zero percent by 2060 or sooner.

Jokowi then invited like-minded countries, business actors, and philanthropic organizations to collaborate to provide sufficient funds for achieving the target.

"The net-zero emissions target as well as targets outlined in the Paris Agreement will not be achieved without resolving issues regarding financing on energy transition. Financing is the key to resolving the world's problems," he stated.
