TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo or Jokowi stated that the massacre in broad daylight of civilians' lives including women in children in Palestine did not make sense. The president once again called for Palestine's liberation from Israel's occupation.
Jokowi conveyed this message in his opening remarks for the R20 International Summit of Religious Authorities (ISORA) organized by Nahdlatul Ulama Executive Council (PBNU) on Monday, Nov. 27, 2023, in Menteng, Central Jakarta. The conference focused its discussion on the role of religion in facing the ongoing violence in the Middle East.
"It is illogical and it is unconscionable that this super modern world allows for war and massacre in Palestine," Jokowi exclaimed. "The humanitarian tragedy in Palestine cannot be tolerated in any capacity."
The tension in the Middle East has been exacerbated ever since Oct. 7 after Iran-backed Hamas crossed the Israel-enforced border, took around 240 hostages, and killed 1,200 people, according to the calculation by Israel.
Since then, Israel went on a relentless bombing campaign on Gaza City, displacing more than two-thirds of Gazans from their homes and forcibly depopulating the northern part of the besieged enclave.
Authorities in Gaza as quoted by Reuters reported that on Sunday, at least 14,000 Palestinians in Gaza have been killed by Israeli bombardment, 40 percent of whom are children.
Israel and Hamas agreed on a four-day truce from Friday to exchange hostages.
Jokowi in his opening remarks stressed that independence is the inalienable right of all nations. Concerning Israel's occupation in Palestine, the president affirmed his call for a ceasefire, acceleration of humanitarian aid entering Gaza, and commencing peace negotiations.
Indonesia was one of the countries mandated by the OIC or Organization of Islamic Cooperation to take actions on behalf of the OIC and the Arab League to halt the massacre in Gaza.
OIC leaders through a resolution adopted during a summit on Nov. 11 in Riyadh also mandated Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt, Qatar, Turkiye, and Nigeria to help kickstart the political process to achieve permanent peace between Palestine and Israel.
