TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi predicted a surge in mobility during the Christmas and New Year Holidays. "The mobility of people during Christmas and New Year holidays is expected to rise compared to last year," he said in a written statement quoted on Thursday, Nov. 9.
Data showed that last year, there were around 44.17 million people mobilized during the holidays. Meanwhile, data from the Land Transportation DG of the ministry predicted the peak season for homecoming (mudik) will occur twice this year, from December 22-23 and December 26-27.
The first homecoming reverse flow is estimated to occur on December 29,30 while the second will occur on January 1-2, 2024. Thus, Budi Karya said that traffic control must be adequately prepared.
Transportation preparation was also among the discussions in the Coordination Meeting of Land Transportation 2023. "To ensure the people could travel safely for homecoming and given adequate [transportation] services," he said.
Land Transportation DG Hendro Sugiatno mentioned that the meeting also discussed the direction of future public transportation in Indonesia. According to Hendro, the Ministry of Transportation must ready its human resources to face the challenges due to the rapid development of public transportation.
"We hope this Coordination Meeting could facilitate new information and increase our capability," Hendro concluded.
