TEMPO.CO, Semarang - Central Java Police managed to thwart the smuggling of 72 vehicles to Timor Leste via Tanjung Emas Port in Semarang City. The vehicles were packed in four containers loaded with eight cars and 64 motorcycles.
These diverse types of vehicles would be sold in Timor Leste at below-market prices. “A motorbike is priced at Rp11 million. There are several types of cars, [for example] a pickup is priced at Rp150 million and that (SUV) is Rp180 million,” Central Java Police’s Director of General Criminal Investigation, Senior Commissioner Johanson Ronald Simamora, said on Tuesday, Oct. 31.
He believed that a syndicate was behind the vehicle smuggling, but the police have not yet found the involvement of the port officials.
Police have arrested one suspect, MAK, in this case. MAK is a recidivist from a similar case and had been arrested by the Pati Police. The police are also still hunting down two other suspects, namely RR from Yogyakarta and a citizen of Timor Leste, XM.
Johanson said that RR played a role as a collector of the vehicles that were temporarily stored in Yogyakarta. They were suspected of repeatedly smuggling vehicles into Timor Leste.
