TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The symptoms of menopause are not unanimous to every woman. However, the root cause is always the same, when the production of reproductive hormones is halted.
According to Jamie Winn, a pharmacist in South Caroline and medical director at Universal Drugstore, there are six common symptoms of menopause:
1. Fatigue
There are several factors that may cause fatigue during menopause. The primary cause is hormonal changes, particularly decreased estrogen and progesterone levels, which can affect energy regulation. "Sleep disturbances, mood swings, physical symptoms, and changes in metabolism also contribute to feelings of tiredness," Jamie Winn said.
2. Breast tenderness
Breast tenderness during menopause can occur due to hormonal fluctuations, especially changes in estrogen and progesterone levels. "These hormones influence breast tissue, and their imbalance can lead to increased sensitivity and discomfort," Winn said, as quoted by Fox News.
3. Thinning hair
Many women experience thinning hair during menopause, another result of the associated hormonal changes. Menopause may shift the hair growth cycle, resulting in hair becoming finer and thinner. Genetics, stress, and nutritional factors can also contribute to hair thinning during menopause.
4. Dizziness or vertigo
Dizziness or vertigo during menopause can also be attributed to hormonal fluctuations. "These hormonal shifts can affect the inner ear's fluid balance and its role in maintaining balance and equilibrium, leading to dizziness and vertigo," Winn said. Other factors are blood pressure fluctuation, energy drink consumption, stress, and age-related changes.
5. Anxiety
Hormone shifts during menopause, especially a decline in estrogen, increase the risk of heightened anxiety. "These hormonal fluctuations can affect neurotransmitters in the brain, leading to mood swings, irritability, and anxiety," Jamie Winn explained.
6. Brittle nail
The cause for this symptom is also a shift in hormones, especially when the estrogen level is lowered. "These hormonal shifts can affect the structure and quality of nails, leading to increased fragility," Winn said.
