TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Garuda Indonesia airline is entering the trial stage of bioavtur J2.4, the biofuel made from refined palm oil. The trial was conducted with Garuda Indonesia B737-800NG PK-GFX plane and CFM56-7B machines.
The trial commenced on a flight from Soekarno-Hatta Airport and continued to the Pelabuhan Ratu Airspace area on Wednesday, October 4, 2023.
"The bioavtur J2.4 trial has been through a series of Engine Ground Run Tests on the same planes in the Garuda Maintenance Facility (GMF) AeroAsia," said PT Garuda Indonesia President Director Irfan Setiaputra in a written statement on Tuesday, October 10.
Irfan explained that this trial will complete the static test conducted last July, using the components of CFM56-7B. Through a series of trials, Irfan said, the research team and relevant stakeholders declared that Boeing 737-800 showed a great and controlled response to bioavtur J2.4 of the Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).
"With this result, Garuda Indonesia and Pertamina are ready to step up this SOE's synergy to the SAF utilization on Garuda Indonesia's commercial flights," Irfan added.
Garuda Indonesia is committed to supporting the decarbonization initiative through implementing bioavtur J2.4, as Indonesia targets to reach net zero emissions by 2060. Further, Irfan mentioned that the preparation of SAF for commercial flights will be based on a comprehensive SAF implementation study on the corporation's readiness to adapt to renewable energy.
"This is the first step to what is hopefully a sustainable mission for the aviation ecosystem to be more adaptive in its contribution to environmental sustainability," Irfan concluded.
