TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Extreme hot weather will increase the risk of dehydration and heatstroke. Citing National Center Biotechnology for Information website, dehydration occurs when the body loses a significant amount of liquid. Meanwhile, heatstroke occurs when the body overheats and fails to effectively lower its temperature.
Below are the health risks caused by dehydration and heatstroke:
Dehydration
Citing the Hopkins Medicine website, dehydration could cause various heat-related diseases, such as diarrhea, vomiting, and fever. Children and elderly are at a high risk of dehydration.
When someone is exposed to extreme heat for a long time and unable to hydrate, it could cause the body to lose a significant amount of water and salt. Dehydration is also caused by medicines, such as diuretics which will drain the body of its liquid and electrolyte.
Heatstroke
Heatstroke happens due to long exposure to sun and extreme heat. People could contract heatstroke if the body fails to release enough sweat to cool the body temperature down. This condition escalates quickly and in need of immediate medical treatment.
Citing the Mayo Clinic website, doing activities outdoors in extreme heat and humidity could cause heatstroke. Wearing thick clothing during extremely hot weather could also cause heatstroke since it prevents the sweat from evaporating properly.
