Santri Day Commemoration: Here are 10 Twibbon Links to Celebrate it

22 October 2023 12:43 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - In Indonesia, Santri Day is celebrated every October 22. This celebration is a form of appreciation and respect for the role of Islamic students in building the nation.

Santri, meaning students of Islamic boarding schools, are spread across the country and are considered to have an important role in maintaining and developing religious, moral and cultural values in society.

The commemoration of National Santri Day began with suggestions from the Islamic boarding school community as a momentum to remember and emulate the spirit of santri. Because, the Islamic boarding school students have fought to uphold Indonesian independence.

Even though this suggestion gave rise to many polemics, President Joko Widodo a.k.a. Jokowi finally decided to designate October 22 as Santri Day. This determination is contained in the Presidential Decree (Keppres) of the Republic of Indonesia number 22 of 2015 concerning Santri Day which is based on three considerations.

Based on nu.or.id, the following are three considerations that based Jokowi's decision to establish Santri Day, namely:

1. Ulema and Islamic boarding school students play a major role in fighting for and maintaining Indonesian independence.

2. Remembering, emulating and continuing the role of ulema and santri in defending and building the nation.

3. On October 22, 1945, a jihad resolution was issued by Islamic boarding school students and clerics from various parts of Indonesia which required every Muslim to defend Indonesia's independence.

On this basis, it is important for Indonesian people to respect the santri and ulema in fighting and building the nation.

Editor's Note: Jihad is not a term for terrorism. Literal meaning of the word is "to struggle" or "putting effort". It means so much more than just a holy war, and the term is applicable in daily life routines such as like working to earn wage for the family, being a teacher and teaching students, and being a doctor and caring for a patient's health.
