TEMPO.CO, JakartaLukas Enembe, the former governor of Papua, has been sentenced to eight years in prison and fined Rp500 million for bribery and gratification related to infrastructure projects in the province. Chief Judge Rianto Adam Pontoh and the other panel of judges read out the verdict today, Oct. 19.

[The defendant] Lukas Enembe is sentenced to eight years in prison and a fine of Rp500 million. If the fine is not paid, he will be subject to four months in prison,” Judge Rianto said at the Corruption Court on Thursday, October 19, 2023.

The judge also imposed an additional fine of Rp19.69 billion that must be paid no later than one month after the decision reaches its legal binding. “If the payment is not made, the property will be confiscated and auctioned off by the prosecutor, or if the convict does not have enough money, he will be imprisoned for [an additional] two years,” Judge Rianto added.

Enembe was found guilty of violating Article 12 (a) of the Law on the Corruption Eradication in conjunction with Article 55 (1-1) of the Criminal Code in conjunction with Article 65 (1) of the Criminal Code and Article 12B of the Corruption Eradication Law.

Enembe's sentence was lighter than that requested by the public prosecutor. At the Central Jakarta District Court on August 13, the Corruption Eradication Commission's (KPK) Prosecutor demanded ten years and six months imprisonment and a fine of Rp1 billion for allegedly accepting bribes and gratification worth Rp46.8 billion.

The prosecutor also asked for an additional sentence on Lukas Enembe to pay compensation of Rp47 billion no later than one month after the case has permanent legal force. Otherwise, all valuable assets of the defendant will be confiscated.
