West Sumatra's Intangible Cultural Heritage Festival Involves India, UK

16 October 2023 19:22 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Padang - The West Sumatra Culture Agency holds the 2023 Intangible Cultural Heritage Festival (ICHF) on October 13 to October 17, 2023, in Payakumbuh City. Five countries, viz. the Netherlands, the UK, India, Malaysia, and Singapore, participated in the event showcasing their intangible cultural heritage. One of them is the Indian martial art Kalaripayattu.

The festival featured cultural performances of the Saman Dance from Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam and Pantun from Riau. There was also an exhibition of the intangible cultural heritage of each region in West Sumatra.

In addition to performances, the festival presented traditional games, namely pacu jawi and pacu itiak, which are listed as intangible cultural heritage, and a cooking show of traditional Minangkabau foods such as rendang, lamang, and dadiah.

Manuscript Exhibition

Several manuscripts were displayed at ICHF 2023, including the Surau Taram manuscript, the War Amulet, and the Tuanku Imam Bonjol manuscript.

The original manuscript of Tuanku Imam Bonjol was lost for 33 years and was rediscovered in 2009. The Cultural Preservation Center (BPK) Region III is proposing the manuscript to become a UNESCO's Memory of the World.

Festival director S. Metron Masdison said the ICHF 2023 West Sumatra was held to promote the cultural ecosystem. “To date, the biggest problem in culture is the disconnection of the ecosystem,” he said.

Metron opined that actors, users, and cultural infrastructure have so far progressed independently without a grand design to unite them. “The ICHF 2023 attempted to realize the ecosystem. [Hopefully,] this activity will drive the connection,” he said.
