TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Sleep is essential for overall good health and well-being. Sleep deprivation can take a toll on mental and physical well-being. A medical page Cleveland Clinic notes that the amount of sleep needed depends on age.
Newborns (0 to three months) need 14 to 17 hours of sleep, infants (4 to 12 months) need 12 to 16 hours of sleep including naps, toddlers (1 to 5 years) need 10 to 14 hours of sleep including naps, school-age children (6 to 12 years) need 9 to 12 hours of sleep.
Meanwhile, teenagers (13 to 18 years) need 8 to 10 hours of sleep, and adults (18 years and over) need 7 to 9 hours of sleep.
According to the Sleep Foundation, here are some of the health problems that can result from lack of sleep:
1. Cardiovascular disease
Studies have found a strong link between sleep deprivation and cardiovascular problems. These include high blood pressure, coronary heart disease, heart attack, and stroke.
2. Diabetes
Lack of sleep interferes with the body's ability to regulate blood sugar levels, increasing the risk of metabolic diseases such as diabetes.
3. Obesity
Research shows that people tend to consume more calories and carbohydrates when they are sleep-deprived.
4. Immunodeficiency
Not getting enough sleep can weaken the immune system. People who lack sleep are less likely to respond to the flu vaccine, making them more susceptible to infections like the common cold.
5. Hormonal disorders
Sleep helps the body to properly produce and regulate the levels of various hormones. A person who lacks sleep has the potential to increase their risk of hormonal problems.
6. Medical conditions
People who lack sleep may feel more severe pain from the condition they are experiencing.
7. Mental health disorders
Sleep and mental health are closely linked. People with sleep deprivation are more likely to suffer from depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder.
