Indonesia Explores Partnership in EV Battery with Argentina

19 September 2023 20:04 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) sees an opportunity to develop electric vehicles or EV battery with Latin American countries, including Argentina, Chile, and Peru.

Sinta W Kamdani, who is Kadin’s Deputy Coordinator for Maritime, Investment, and Foreign Affairs, said that Argentina, Chile, and Peru are rich in important mineral resources that are key to the production of EV batteries.

“This means, [Indonesia can] import minerals from those countries to increase the supply (raw materials) for EV production because they have the resources, but don't have the factories,” Sinta said in a press conference of the Indonesia-Latin America and the Caribbean (INA-LAC) business forum in Jakarta on Monday, as quoted from Antara today, September 19, 2023.

According to her, the condition will benefit Indonesia as a global EV producer and save its critical mineral reserves.

INA-LAC 2023 will be held in Jakarta on October 16-17, 2023. The forum aims to facilitate business actors to reach the Latin American and Caribbean markets.

Umar Hadi, director general for the Americas and Europe at the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said the forum is crucial as Indonesia has an interest in mineral resources for the development of its EV ecosystem.

“Those countries are rich in mineral resources, such as lithium and copper, which are abundant there, so it is increasingly important for us to cooperate with the Latin American and Caribbean regions to ensure supply chains,” Umar said.

Indonesia has established the Indonesia Battery Corporation (IBC) for the industrial development and production of EV batteries. To date, IBC has partnered with PT Ningbo Contemporary Brunp Lygend Co. Ltd. (CBL) and LG Energy Solution to develop an integrated EV battery.
