Anticipating U-17 World Cup 2023, Jakarta Govt Asks Former Bayam Residents to Relocate

19 September 2023 13:25 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The city government of North Jakarta asked the former residents of Bayam Village to relocate from their tents in front of Jakarta International Stadium (JIS) before the U-17 World Cup 2023 scheduled to commence on November 2 until December 2, 2023.

The government appointed the  Papanggo village head Tomi Haryono to persuade the residents. "We take persuasive action through notice letters so the tent occupants in front of JIS are willing to pack up their stuff for U-17 World Cup," Tomi said to reporters when met in his office in North Jakarta on Monday, September 18, 2023.

The former Bayam residents lived in tents as a protest against the provincial government of Jakarta and PT Jakarta Propertindo (Jakpro). The residents were relocated from their homes for the development of JIS. However, they refused to reside in the apartment provided by the government due to ongoing rent conflict.

For the residents' comfort, the city government is offering apartment units in North Jakarta as a better housing option. "Hopefully they will consider residing in the apartment units in North Jakarta. Near the location [of the tents], there are schoolchildren, so we're just offering a solution," he said.

However, the residents still refused to be relocated. The city government of North Jakarta gave an ultimatum for the residents to consider their options until September 22, 2023.
