5 Tips to Exercise During High Air Pollution Level

18 September 2023 12:34 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Internist Sukamto Koesnoe mentioned some tips for people who live in cities with high air pollution levels to exercise safely. The doctor said that people who reside in cities like Jakarta need to take precautions before exercising to anticipate the effects of air pollution

The five tips to exercise are as follows:

1. Pick the right time

To exercise safely, try to pick the time when the air pollution level is low, for example, in the morning or at night. Additionally, try to avoid exercising outside during peak hours since the air pollution level at the time is high.

2. Check the air quality

Use an application or website to check the present air quality before exercising outside. If the air quality is unhealthy, consider exercising inside. Don't forget to wear masks when exercising outside to protect yourself from inhaling pollution or hazardous particulates.

3. Pick the right location

Exercise away from the sources of air pollution, such as the roads or factories. Choose greener places to exercise, namely a park or bike lanes separate from the main traffic.

4. Reduce the intensity

If the air pollution level is on the rise, consider reducing the intensity and duration of your exercise. For example, go for a jog instead of running or biking.

5. Pay attention to symptoms

While you're exercising pay attention to your body. If you experience symptoms related to air pollution such as difficulty breathing, coughing incessantly, or eye irritation, immediately halt the exercise and find a cleaner place. Maintain your health and ensure your immune system is airtight by maintaining a healthy diet, adequate sleep, staying hydrated, and vaccination.
