Indonesia Contingent Stays for Jamboree Amid South Korea's Heatwave Warning

7 August 2023 12:04 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The government of Indonesia has no plans to pull out its 1,500 World Scout Jamboree contingents from South Korea despite the imminent heatwave warnings.

"I have asked for (the contingent's) plans, and so far they're not planning to pull out from the event. We are hoping the situation will improve, the weather to cool down," said Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi when met in front of Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Sunday, August 6, 2023.

Minister Retno explained that the ministry has communicated constantly with the Indonesian Embassy in Seoul, which has visited the jamboree site several times in SaeManGeum, South Korea.

The Embassy relayed that the 1,500 Indonesian scouts members are in good condition despite the heat. "Gratefully, the majority of them (the Indonesian contingent) are in good condition, said Minister Retno.

According to information received on Wednesday, August 2, 2023, South Korean authorities said that 23 people have lost their lives to the heatwave this summer, tripling the number of last year's casualties.

From May to July, South Korea's firefighters reported 21 heat-related deaths, with two more deaths reported on Tuesday, August 1, 2023.
