TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported a tectonic earthquake measuring a magnitude of 5.5 rocking Bangkalan of East Java today, August 4, at 07:31:41 Western Indonesian Time (WIB).
“The quake is caused by rock deformation on the slab of the Indo-Australian Plate which is subducted under the Eurasian Plate,” BMKG’s Earthquake and Tsunami Center Head Daryono said in a release published on Friday.
He explained that the quake was centered in the sea, 91 kilometers northeast of Bangkalan, at a depth of 582 kilometers.
The shaking was felt in Karangkates and Pacitan of East Java and Denpasar and Kuta of Bali with an intensity scale of II MMI. There is no report of damage or casualties due to the quake submitted yet.
Based on the modeling results, the quake had no potential for a tsunami. As of 07:42 WIB, the BMKG also did not detect any activity of aftershocks.
Daryono asked residents to stay calm, not be influenced by rumors regarding the quake, and avoid cracked or damaged buildings caused by the quake.
Many people buzzed the BMKG’s social media account, claiming to have felt the earthquake’s tremor. They mentioned their locations, including Banyuwangi, Blitar, and Bali’s Canggu.
