TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Head of Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Dwikorita Karnawati said that the weather anomalies caused by El Nino will continue in Indonesia through September 2023. "The peak is predicted to happen in the August-September period," said Dwikorita at the State Palace on Tuesday, July 18, 2023.
Dwikorita said that El Nino will cause drought and in consequence affects food security in Indonesia. However, since Indonesia is located on the equator between two oceans and its topography is mountainous, El Nino will also bring flood. "Due to its topography and location, it is possible that one region will experience drought while its neighbor is flooding or experiencing hydrometeorological disasters," she said.
"Therefore, we urge the public to, aside from protecting the environment, manage water use, adapt cropping patterns, but also continue monitoring the dynamic information on the weather and climate from BMKG," she added.
Dwikorita also stated that the government is striving to minimize the effect of El Nino and ensure it does not disturb food supplies. "Along with the President, Vice President, and several ministers, we have discussed the anticipation and readiness to face El Nino," she said.
President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo held a limited meeting with several ministers at the State Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday, July 18, 2023, at around 10:00 a.m. The meeting discussed two agendas, namely anticipation to face El Nino and the acceleration of tuberculosis elimination.
The meeting was attended by Coordinating Minister for Maritime and Investment Affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Muhadjir Effendy, Coordinating Minister for Politics, Law, and Security Mahfud MD, Minister for Environment and Forestry Siti Nurbaya Bakar, Minister of Agriculture Syahrul Yasin Limpo, and Minister for Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin.
