TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Member of Indonesian Association of the Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, dr. Dicky Allgheri Wartono, Sp.BTKV (K), stated that walking for 15 minutes is the ideal and safest exercise for post-heart surgery patients. According to Dicky, exercising is a mandatory routine activity after heart surgery, tailored to one's own capability. "Rest for a week, then once or twice a day exercise is mandatory," said the thoracic and cardiovascular surgeon who graduated from the Medical Faculty of Universitas Indonesia.
On the other hand, since post-heart surgery patients need to be accompanied for two weeks, the type of exercise should also adapt the companion's ability. "The companion will be able to follow no matter the exercise. However, if the patient is a 10km marathon athlete, please be considerate about it," said Dicky.
Other recommendations
In addition to routine physical activity, Dicky also recommends refraining from smoking and regulating your diets, especially choosing food items that will not encourage high cholesterol and sugar build-up in your body. "Specifically for people with metabolic disorder, namely diabetes or hypertension, the random blood sugar level should be under 150mg/dL after surgery. Otherwise, for people without metabolic disorder, it should be under 110 or even 100mg/dL," Dicky explained.
Meanwhile, for patients with high blood pressure, the systolic blood pressure needs to be under 130mmHg or even 120mmHg.
Currently, the most recent medical technology allows first response to a cardiac disease with Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery (MICS). The technology enables for a less than 5cm incision under the chest so there is no need for the slow-healing sternotomy. According to Dicky, MICS is proven safe and does not cause complications with no scar problems. MICS also allows the patients to recover swiftly.
