TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati said that Indonesia's level of utilization of new and renewable energy (NRE), which has only reached 0.5 percent of the country's potentials, is embarrassing. She made the statement at the 2023 EBTKE Conex event at ICE BSD, Wednesday, July 12.
"It's 0.5 percent, Mr. Hilmi (Medco Energi main director of Hilmi Panigoro). This is embarrassing, sir. That's not even one percent. Mr. Director General, Mr. Sugeng (DPR Commission VII chairman), the DPR must keep pushing the Energy Minister," she said.
Sri said that if coal-fired power plants are retired, the amount energy supply could drop. Meanwhile, the demand for energy continues to rise. This means that coal-fired power plants must immediately be replaced by plants running on NRE sources, she remarked.
The minister said Indonesia has plenty of NRE potentials, from water to geothermal, and others. Each renewable energy source requires a different investment cost to develop, considering their different characteristics.
Furthermore, Sri said that the Finance Ministry will continue to engage relevant sectors in order to pursue and achieve greater utilization of renewable energies.
