TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Papua Street Carnival will be held on July 7, 2023. Themed Papua Extravaganza (The East Great Spirit), the event will feature a parade of hundreds of carnival dresses and exhibit local creative products.
Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Uno supported the carnival as a celebration for creative economy actors throughout the province. He explained that the event is a follow-up to President Joko Widodo or Jokowi's directives during the inauguration of the Papua Youth Creative Hub in Jayapura back on March 21, 2023.
“Seeing the extraordinary potential of the creative economy in the land of Papua, President Jokowi's order will finally be realized thanks to the cooperation and collaboration with the Papua Youth Creative Hub which is under the guidance of the State Intelligence Agency (BIN),” Sandiaga said.
“This could later become an annual event agenda, like the Rio Street Carnival in Brazil or the Mardi Gras Festival in America. In Indonesia, it may be similar to Jember Fashion Carnaval in East Java,” he added.
He said the event involves the participation of the Papua Youth Creative Hub community, artists, craftsmen, and Papuan creative industry players. This event will feature an exhibition of local creative products that reflect the expertise and creativity of the Papuan people.
It is hoped that the Papua Street Carnival will open up investment opportunities in the creative economy and present positive impacts on the local economy that may lead to an increase in people’s income. It is also expected to become an effective promotion tool for the Papuan tourism sector.
“We hope that Papua will show to other regions and the world that Papua is a place with a million potentials and valuable treasures that can leverage tourism, stimulate the creative economy in Indonesia, produce many talented local artists, and bring Indonesia's good name nationally and internationally,” Sandiaga Uno said.
