TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Chairperson of the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) Erick Thohir will reportedly meet President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo to discuss the upcoming FIFA U-17 World Cup preparations.
“God willing [the meeting] President Jokowi and I will meet at 16:30 Indonesia Western Time (WIB) to convey FIFA’s requirement, as I have yet to announce it publicly,” said Thohir at the South Jakarta National Police Headquarters (Mabes Polri) on Monday, June 26, 2023.
Prior to this, the international football association FIFA appointed Indonesia as the host nation for the U-17 World Cup following a decision in a FIFA council session held in Zurich, Swiss, on June 23. Indonesia replaced Peru, which was initially appointed to host the event.
Peru’s role as host nation was then dropped by FIFA because it was deemed unable to meet the infrastructure preparations according to a predetermined time limit, especially after Peru's preparations were hampered by Typhoon Yaku in March earlier this year.
After meeting with Jokowi, Erick is also scheduled to meet with National Police Chief Listyo Sigit Prabowo and Public Works and Public Housing Minister Basuki Hadimuljono in talks of preparing the stadium for the FIFA U-17 World Cup. The event will start on November 10 and last until December 2, which will see 24 national football teams compete against each other.
