TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Chairman of Indonesia Football Association, or PSSI, Erick Thohir confirmed that Bima Sakti will coach Indonesia National Team for the 2023 U-17 World Cup in November.
"In accordance with the contract with Shin Tae-Yong, the deal was he coaches the senior and the U-23 teams. Then we gave a chance for Indra (Sjafri) to coach the junior and we looked for a technical director to maintain the balance of Indonesia’s football," Erick said in a press conference at the Danareksa building in Jakarta, Saturday, June 24.
"We’ll give a chance to Bima Sakti, we also need to train young coaches. In Shin Tae-yong management, there is coach Nova Arianto and some other new coaches; in Indra Sjafri management, there is also a young coach like Kurniawan, and I think this is positive," Erick added.
FIFA has officially appointed Indonesia to host the 2023 U-17 World Cup in a meeting of FIFA councils in Zurich, Switzerland on Friday, June 23.
Indonesia replaces Peru which was revoked as the host of the 2023 U-17 World Cup due to the unreadiness of infrastructure. Peru’s lack of preparation was caused by the disaster of Typhoon Yaku in March 2023.
Erick said that the young coaches at the national team would give a positive impact on the regeneration of the coaching team. He said that he would look for a coaching assistant and other figures to fill the coaching team under Bima Sakti, which would be discussed with the Executive Committee members.
The SOE Minister assured that PSSI would send the best team. During the preparation, they will conduct a selection of U-16 and U-17 players in nine Indonesian regions. The chosen ones will undergo a training camp starting from July to August 2023.
The FIFA U-17 World Cup will be held from November 2 to December 2, 2023. Erick Thohir said the location of the event is pending the decision from FIFA which will come again to check the readiness of the stadium.
