TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo or Jokowi will invite the national team football players who failed to compete in the U-20 World Cup in their home country. The players will likely meet the president in a day or two.
"Of course, there is a mechanism from the Palace to arrange the meeting," Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) chairman Erick Thohir said in a press conference after meeting Jokowi at the State Palace, Friday, March 31, 2023.
FIFA has officially removed Indonesia as the host of the U20 World Cup of 2023. One of the reasons FIFA stripped strip Indonesia's hosting rights was strong rejections to host the Israeli team, including from regional heads and the public.
The U-20 national team players took to social media to express their disappointment over the loss of hosting rights cancellation, which also means they cannot play in the tournament
Most of them said they were sad and dejected for having their dreams taken away, but some players also posted satirical remarks aimed at people they considered to be the cause of the cancelation.
PSSI is also facing possible sanctions from FIFA.
"If we make political demands in sports, things will always turn out like this. We could be exiled from the football ecosystem," SSI executive committee member Arya Sinulingga had said before FIFA announced the cancellation.
