TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo will sacrifice 38 cows that will be distributed to 38 provinces throughout Indonesia on Eid al-Adha 1444 Hijri. The number has increased by four compared to last year due to the addition of new provinces.
“Bapak President gives [a cow] per province as suggested by each provincial government. So there have been suggestions from the governors [where] the cows will be distributed,” Presidential Secretariat Head Heru Budi Hartono said at the State Palace, Central Jakarta, Friday, June 23, 2023.
Heru explained that the Presidential Secretariat will cooperate with the Agriculture Ministry and the Religious Affairs Ministry to distribute the sacrificial animals. The cows will also undergo health checks and must be free from foot and mouth disease to ensure their best quality. “And of course, the weight ranges from 900 kilograms to 1.2 tons,” he added.
The type of cattle includes cemental, angus limousine, brahman, and ongole from Bali. Jakarta will receive a cemental bull with a weight of 1.2 tons that will be slaughtered in the Istiqlal Mosque.
Heru said there is a possibility that Jokowi will sacrifice more than a cow in the capital. However, Heru could not yet confirm where the President will celebrate this year’s Eid al-Adha which will fall on June 29, 2023.
