TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Minister of National Development Planning or Bappenas Head Suharso Monoarfa disclosed the projection of the country’s population in 2020-2045. He said Indonesia will continuously see a slowdown in population growth, especially starting in 2030.
Back in 2020, Indonesia has the fourth largest population in the world. “But in 2045, Indonesia's position will decline to six because Indonesia's population growth will start to slow down starting in the 2030s,” Suharso said at Jakarta Convention Center on Tuesday, May 16, 2023.
The projection for Indonesia's population in 2020-2050 is carried out by Bappenas in tandem with the Central Statistics Agency (BPS). Based on the study, the fourth and fifth most populous countries in 2045 will be Nigeria and Pakistan, respectively.
Bappenas and BPS noted that the annual average rate of Indonesia’s population growth in the 2020-2045 period will be 0.67 percent. The figure continues to drop every year.
Based on the study, the proportion of the population aged 0-14 years will decrease from 24.56 percent in 2020 to 19.61 percent in 2045, while the population aged 65 years and over will increase by 6.16 percent to 14.61 percent in 2045.
The Bappenas head assessed that the population structure is undergoing rapid changes. In 2023, India has become the world’s most populous country, overtaking China which was predicted to have experienced negative population growth since 2021.
