TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo inspected facilities at the Komodo Regional Hospital (RSUD) in Labuan Bajo, West Manggarai Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) on the first day of the 2023 ASEAN Summit. The regional hospital prepared to support the biannual event of the Southeast Asian Countries was built at a cost of Rp220 billion.
“We had encouraged [the readiness] of this hospital for the ASEAN Summit,” the President said in a statement on Tuesday, May 9, 2023.
According to him, the Komodo Hospital was constructed with assistance from the Health Ministry, both in terms of buildings and equipment. He also assessed that the hospital’s medical equipment is great and complete enough for the treatment of a number of serious illnesses.
“If we look at the equipment, it is already good for the treatment of cancer, heart diseases, stroke, and all,” he said.
Shortage of specialist doctors
However, the state head believed that the Komodo Hospital needs more specialist doctors. He thus asked the Health Ministry and the regional hospital to catch up on the shortage of specialist doctors to prevent local people from seeking treatment outside the city.
“The Health Ministry and the Komodo Hospital are urged to meet this to make everything complete so whatever disease can be treated here at the district instead of going to the province or Jakarta,” Jokowi emphasized.
