TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The West Jakarta District Court panel of judges sentenced former West Sumatra Police Chief Inspector General Teddy Minahasa Putra to life imprisonment. Chief Judge Jon Sarman Saragih said the decorated police general is considered guilty of a violation of the law over the abuse of a confiscated drug stash.
“The defendant is handed the life imprisonment,” said Jon in the legal proceedings on May 9.
Teddy is found to violate multiple violations overseen under Article 114 (2) of Law No.35/2009 on narcotics and Article 55 (1) of the Criminal Code (KUHP). This verdict is lower than the death penalty state prosecutors initially seek for.
However, pieces of evidence that incriminated Teddy that led to this verdict were letters, a CCTV decoder, mobile phones, a flash disk containing a recording of a police drug bust press conference, and a blood check. No drugs were confiscated from Teddy Minahasa.
What the Trial Revealed
Teddy Minahasa is accused of ordering former Bukittinggi Police Chief Adjunct Police Commissioner Dody Prawiranegara to set aside 10 kilograms of methamphetamine from a police drug bust that collected 41,1 kilograms of the illegal substance back in May of 2022.
In the trial that revealed facts, evidence of Teddy's WhatsApp messages to Dody was revealed which showed the two-star police general giving the order to exchange methamphetamine with another chemical compound called tawas (alum) in exchange for a personal reward for Dody.
Initially, Dody refused to follow the orders coming from Teddy, but he felt pressured and decided that refusing the order was not an option. Eventually, Dody ordered his assistant Syamsul Ma'arif to swap five kilograms of methamphetamine for five kilograms of alum powder on June 14, 2022, which was one day before the police press conference to showcase evidence destruction.
Another individual was also incriminated in the drug controversy in Linda Pujiastuti, who was asked by Teddy Minahasa to seek possible buyers for the drugs.
