TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Deputy speaker of Jakarta Legislative Council (DPRD Jakarta) Commission E, Anggara Wicitra Sastroamidjojo, on Thursday, said that the legal prosecution of newcomers in Jakarta must comply with applicable regulations.
“We must base the legal prosecution on existing regulations,” said the PSI faction member to Tempo on April 27. “If the Home Affairs regulation requires a newcomer to have a home to live this means we can legally act on people who don’t meet that requirement.”
Previously, Jakarta Population and Civil Registry Department (Dukcapil) announced that it will register newcomers that lack the aspect of residence in the capital city.
Anggara said that the Jakarta administration is permitted to review the legal basis if it feels the need for stricter rules regarding migrants to reduce overpopulation. The legislator said Jakarta as a global city will in fact attract migrants who arrive to try their luck.
The PSI politician insisted that if the Jakarta administration is concerned about employment issues, a stricter requirement can be created to deal with the issue where city residents with official ID cards are placed as a higher priority over newcomers.
Anggara said that migrating from one city to another is the basic right of an Indonesian citizen but asserted that the problem regarding unemployment must be taken into account.
