TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Transportation Ministry recorded that as of Thursday, April 27, 2023, or D+4 of Eid al-Fitr, 55.8 percent of vehicles have not yet returned to Jakarta via the Trans Java Toll Road.
To ensure the Eid homecoming or mudik return went smoothly, Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi in tandem with National Police’s Traffic Corps (Korlantas) chief Firman Santyabudi held a coordination and inspection meeting at KM 70 of the Cikampek Utama Toll Gate.
“There are still 5 more days until May 1, 2023, to keep the return flow smooth,” said Budi Karya as quoted from an official statement, Thursday, April 27, 2023.
Additionally, Budi Karya also monitored the traffic from the air using a helicopter to observe the situation of vehicle movements on toll roads and arterial roads.
Budi mentioned that Lebaran Kupat or the post-Eid celebration day commonly held in Central Java, East Java, and Madura falls on Sunday, so there is a tendency for people to travel back to the capital on Sunday or next Monday.
"Apart from Lebaran Kupat, the movement of vehicles in agglomeration areas such as Jakarta, Bandung, and their surrounding regions will increase this weekend and has the potential to cause traffic jams if left unchecked," Budi Karya said.
Therefore, Budi Karya urged Eid homecoming travelers to return starting Thursday, Friday, and Saturday or April 27-29 in order to avoid overcrowding at the peak of the return traffic on Sunday and Monday or April 30 and May 1.
